Can You Go Home Mid-Semester? Travelling on an Australian Student Visa
Australian student visas (subclass 500) are typically granted with multiple entry rights, which means students can leave and re-enter the country while their visa remains valid. As such, international students may travel home during official semester breaks, provided that they maintain enrolment in their course, keep their Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) active, and meet all other visa obligations such as Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) and a valid passport.
However, students should be mindful of academic responsibilities, as leaving during teaching or exam periods may require formal approval from their institution, particularly if coursework, labs, or assessments would be missed.
Before making travel arrangements, students should confirm that their visa and passport will remain valid for the duration of the trip and that their OSHC continues to cover their stay in Australia. Some universities recommend that students notify the international student office of their travel plans, even during official breaks, as a precaution. Although many students have reported leaving during breaks without any issues, relying solely on anecdotal advice can be risky. The safest approach is to confirm with both the university and the Department of Home Affairs before travelling.
By doing so, students can enjoy reconnecting with family and friends without jeopardizing their studies or visa status.
